As part of Fine Wine, Fine Art and Fine Conversation show series, Brushes with Greatness presents the group exhibition, Cheek by Jowl, curated by Juliet Wilson.
In everyday life we experience moments of closeness, and the warmth of these often trivial interactions has the ability to strengthen rapport and bring overlooked comfort. It is these moments that Cheek by Jowl explores; overlooked intimacy in understated engagements. The expressionistic and figurative works by UK-based artists include figures in close proximity, experiencing moments that we might not consider significant or momentous.
The multi-media work, largely demonstrating intimacy in imagined spaces, explores influences including Latin American literature, Scottish folklore, as well as childhood and identity.
Whether it’s harmonious social interaction or moments of reflection presented in the work, the serenity and calmness invites us in, much like the intimate space of Tap & Bottle. Cheek by Jowl echoes the warmth and nearness we feel inside a such familiar space that we feel during the winter months. The connectedness that oozes from within the rich and vibrant colours of the paintings highlights what spaces like these are best at, bringing people together.
